I conducted this documentary project in Shanghai, between 2004 and 2008. I explored several districts downtown and in the city outskirts, showing the urban transformation, the rise of the modern city and the new urban structure, the replacement of old dwellings and industries bound to demolition. Someone rightly said that I conducted it with a "back-alley mindset". It was a seminal project, the first of the documentary ones I conducted in China. For 10 years, I visited and documented places, in Shanghai and elsewhere, trying to grasp of sense of what was happening, and about to change the face of the world. I was trying to find my place and sketch my personal story herein.
Photographs from the project were exhibited in a few places, notably in Shanghai at the former Epson center, in Paris in specialized bookstores, and in San Fransisco. Portfolios have been published in journals and webzines. I released a book in 2008 (see Books), with forewords by photography curator and gallery owner Jean Loh and Pr. Lin Lu.
